COMMUNITY AND WORLD OUTREACH
UPDATE ON AFRICAN INLAND CHURCH (AIC) KATISSA- MACHAKOS, KENYA
Our 2013 trip back to AIC Katissa is less than 6 monthsaway. We have had a number of contacts with AIC church members, including Sunday School teachers, church members, choir directors, ministers, and students.
Since this will be our 4th trip to Machakos, Kenya, the excitement is tempered by the realization of all the work that needs to be done in the next 11 months. The second floor balcony of the projected three story church building has been finished. Currently, work progresses on moving the walls up to the third floor level.
Most of the building cost has been paid for by local church members. Fund raising activities have included auctions of goats and sugar cane, as well as altar calls that announce the amount each person gives! You cannot understand how important this effort is until you envision this church as a local community center that provides space for worship services in Kamba and English, Sunday School classes, gospel music concerts, medical clinics, knitting groups, and youth activities that include choirs, dance groups, and sports teams.
The church is growing so well because it is a gathering place of Christian love and community. North Christian Church’s contributions of time, work, and finance are not doing something FOR the church at Machakos; these contributions rather enable local church leaders to build their community of faith. This effort has raised approximately $ 24,000, built a well and a covered gathering shelter, visited local schools, and run a medical clinic which has served about 1,300 patients during three past visits. While the financial contributions are appreciated, what is really cherished is the personal presence, encouragement, and one-to-one connection that the team has provided. As in all missionary efforts (or should we say, world relationship building efforts), team members from Columbus always receive more spiritually and emotionally than we give.
The June golf outing organized by Neal Whitson raised approximately $ 1,300. The Community Music Concert organized by Joshua Kiilu and Rachael Muinde, Sheryl Elston, and Ashley Burton raised $ 200. Marty Winslow has gathered glasses, and Karen Whitson has gathered bandanas. Considerably more financial support is needed over the next eleven months. Any fund raising ideas are welcome.
